This Day in Automotive History – October 10

  1. 1901 – Ford’s First Race: One of the pivotal moments that gave rise to the Ford Motor Company occurred on this day. Henry Ford, not yet widely known, drove his race car called the “Sweepstakes” against a car from the more established Alexander Winton. Despite the odds, Ford emerged victorious, gaining much-needed attention and financial backing that would help in founding the Ford Motor Company.
  2. 1923 – Audi’s Name Origin: The name “Audi” is the Latin translation of the surname of the founder, August Horch. “Horch” in German means “listen”, which in Latin translates to “Audi”. The four rings of the Audi logo represent four car companies (Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer) that banded together in 1932 to create what’s known today as Audi AG. This fact, although not directly occurring on October 10th, became more well-known during the company’s celebrations and announcements on this day.
  3. 1957 – The Debut of the Edsel: On this day, Ford’s much-anticipated Edsel made its debut. Designed to be the car of the future, it unfortunately became one of the biggest flops in automotive history. Due to a combination of an economic recession, poor marketing, and production issues, the Edsel became a symbol of corporate America’s failure to understand consumer needs.
  4. 1973 – The Start of the Oil Crisis: While it technically began on October 6 when Arab members of OPEC declared an oil embargo, it was on October 10 that its effects started becoming evident worldwide, especially in the U.S. Long lines at gas stations, increased gas prices, and the realization of the U.S.’s dependency on foreign oil led to significant changes in the automotive industry, with a push towards fuel efficiency and smaller cars.
  5. 1992 – First Built-in Navigation System: While today we take in-car GPS for granted, the first commercially available in-dash navigation system, the “Mazda Cosmo”, was introduced to the world on this day by the Japanese automaker.
  6. 2000 – Bridgestone/Firestone Recall: One of the largest tire recalls in history took place on this day. Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. announced they would be recalling 6.5 million tires, mostly used on Ford SUVs, after reports linked the tires to accidents resulting in numerous injuries and deaths.
  7. 2007 – Tesla Roadster: On this day, Tesla began regular production of its first vehicle model, the Tesla Roadster. This car was a significant milestone as it was the first all-electric car to use lithium-ion battery cells and the first electric vehicle with a range greater than 200 miles per charge.
  8. 2011 – Passing of Dan Wheldon: British IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon tragically passed away after a collision at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on this day. He was a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and his untimely death led to extensive discussions and subsequent modifications in the realm of racing safety.
  9. Asian Automotive History – 1989: Nissan R32 Skyline GT-R: On October 10, Nissan introduced the R32 Skyline GT-R, a car that would later earn the nickname “Godzilla” from Australian car publications. It was packed with tech innovations and would dominate motorsports in the early ’90s.
  10. Thailand Automotive History: While there isn’t a specific event on October 10th directly related to Thailand’s automotive history, it’s noteworthy to mention that Thailand has been often referred to as the “Detroit of Asia.” The country has a robust automotive industry and is Southeast Asia’s largest auto producer. Brands like Toyota, Isuzu, and Honda have massive production plants there, and in recent years, Thailand has been pushing towards becoming a hub for electric vehicle manufacturing.

October 10th offers a diverse look into the automotive world, from racing tragedies to technological advancements, and from massive industry shake-ups to the quieter milestones that mark a brand’s evolution. These events remind us of the vast and interconnected world of automobiles and their impact on global history.
